You know what would be awesome?

Basically the only reason I wanted SENNA to score at least an Oscar nomination wasn’t even because I put much stock in the Oscars (I don’t, especially not in the past several years), but because it would’ve raised awareness. It would’ve extended its cinematic run here. More people would’ve sat up and taken notice of this amazing little film (which has since gone on to become the most successful British documentary of all time, and has racked up more awards than I can count right now). At its core, this is a film that took over 7 years to make (though people have been wanting to make some sort of film about Ayrton Senna since 1995), it started out small, it lucked into distribution at all in the States via ESPN Films and Universal, and… it’s just… YOU GUYS. You don’t even know about me and this fucking movie.

This film is innovative. Why does everyone go on about how they don’t use any talking heads the entire time, but just let you live the story with Ayrton? Because that’s groundbreaking documentary film work. This could potentially change (IMHO for the better) how documentaries are made. The editing is flawless (and thank god it won a BAFTA for that; there isn’t a single wasted moment in the film, and it pulls you right in, whether you give a shit about racing or not), the soundtrack (scored by the brilliant Antonio Pinto) is beautiful and evocative, the narrative arc so close to what you’d think of as a fictional Hollywood epic it seems unreal. But it was real; it was Ayrton Senna’s life and unparalleled career. This film makes people who’ve never even heard of this guy fall in love with him and cry over him. You don’t have to know anything about, or care about, racing at all. That’s not the point.

I’m just getting emotional about this, I’m sorry. I guess because I’m seeing a LOT of BAFTA posts on my dash and it’s actually giving me just the slightest bit of hope that SENNA’s audience will reach even wider now, since the Oscars snubbed it for dumbass reasons. That’s all I was asking for. I’ve been championing this film like it’s my baby since August 2011 when it finally hit American shores, and every victory they have, they share with the fans with so much love and enthusiasm, and I just have ALL THE FEELINGS right now and I want everyone to just SEE it and finally realize how fucking brilliant it is, the end.

so many feelings, so many happy tears :’)

I have to reblog with a giant “THIS.” Everything she’s said here is true. I was one of those people who went into it knowing nothing about Formula One racing, Ayrton Senna, his life, or his career. I came out at the end of it with tears streaming down my face and I fell in love with him. Watch it; I guarantee you won’t regret it.
